Conservative AFCAT Tattoo Rule
The AFCAT source file notes that AFCAT 02/2023 Appendix A does not spell out a tattoo policy as detailed as the NDA notification, but says the IAF generally follows the same policy: tattoos are permitted only on the inner face of the forearm from inside of elbow to wrist, and on the dorsal/back side of the hand. Existing project CDS/OTA and NDA tattoo pages also treat AFCAT as aligned with this rule.
If your tattoo is outside these zones, treat it as a serious selection risk unless the latest AFCAT notification or medical authority clearly permits it.
Permitted-Looking Locations
- Inner face of forearm: inside of elbow to wrist.
- Dorsal / back side of hand.
- Traditional tribal tattoos may be treated differently only under the relevant official policy and documentation.
High-Risk Tattoo Cases
- Neck, face, chest, upper arm, outer forearm, wrist areas beyond permitted zone, legs or visible large designs.
- Offensive, extremist, obscene, discriminatory or indiscipline-signalling content.
- Fresh tattoos with infection, keloid, hypertrophic scarring or poor healing.
- Tattoo removal scars that create keloid or unsightly marks.
Tattoo vs Skin Medical Rules
A tattoo issue can become both a policy issue and a skin issue. The AFCAT source lists large or multiple keloids as a cause for rejection, and dermatological disease or poor healing can independently affect medical fitness.
What to Do Before AFCAT Medical
- Do not add a new tattoo before the medical board.
- If you already have a tattoo, document its location clearly.
- If considering removal, consult a qualified dermatologist early; poor removal scars can create a new problem.
- Check the latest AFCAT notification at the time of application because operative policy can change.
Medical board decisions are made by Armed Forces medical specialists. This page is a structured preparation guide, not a substitute for an official medical board opinion.
FAQs
Is tattoo allowed in AFCAT?
Use the conservative Air Force rule in the project: inner forearm and dorsal hand are the safe permitted zones; other locations are risky.
Can tattoo removal solve AFCAT medical?
Only if removal heals cleanly. Keloid or unsightly scarring can create a medical problem.
Does AFCAT have the same tattoo policy as NDA?
The project source treats IAF practice as generally aligned with the NDA-style permitted-location rule, while advising candidates to check the latest AFCAT notification.
Are tribal tattoos treated differently?
They may be considered under official policy and documentation, but candidates should not assume automatic acceptance.
Should I get a new tattoo before AFCAT?
No. It creates avoidable policy and skin-healing risk before the medical board.
