AFCAT Dental Requirements 2026

AFCAT dental fitness is not only about having teeth. The board checks dental points, functional opposition, gums, restorations, malocclusion, implants, orthodontic appliances and mouth opening.

Dental Points System

  • Minimum 14 dental points are required.
  • Each incisor, canine, first premolar, second premolar and underdeveloped third molar can count 1 point if opposite tooth is present.
  • Each first molar, second molar and well-developed third molar can count 2 points in good opposition.
  • All 16 upper jaw teeth in good functional opposition can produce 20 or 22 points depending on third molars.

Required Teeth in Each Jaw

Teeth Not Counted for Points

  • Unrestored caries, broken-down crowns, pulp exposure, residual root stumps and teeth with abscesses or sinuses.
  • Improper, broken, discoloured or doubtful restorations, or restorations with peri-apical pathology.
  • Loose teeth with demonstrable mobility.
  • Periodontally splinted teeth.
  • Retained deciduous teeth.
  • Morphological defects compromising efficient mastication.

Dental Rejection Traps

  • Poor oral hygiene with gross visible calculus, periodontal pockets or bleeding gums.
  • Generalised calculus and extensive swollen/red gums with or without exudates.
  • Symptomatic TMJ clicking, tenderness or dislocation.
  • Mouth opening below 30 mm at incisal edges.
  • Orthodontic appliances: fixed or removable appliances make the wearer unfit.
  • Clinical submucous fibrosis, oral carcinoma or serious hard/soft tissue abnormalities.

Dental Implants

A single tooth implant-supported crown may be awarded points like a natural tooth if it is in functional apposition and integrity is confirmed. Maximum two dental implants are permitted. More than two implants do not add extra points and require clinical judgement.
