English in the CDS/OTA Paper
The CDS English paper rewards rule-based grammar plus a working vocabulary. How many English questions in CDS/OTA?
120 questions in 2 hours. Maximum marks 100 (each question carries 0.83 raw marks, scaled). One-third negative marking, so don't guess wildly.
What's the weight of vocabulary vs grammar?
Roughly 30-35 vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, spelling, paired words, idioms) and 35-40 grammar (spotting errors, sentence improvement, blanks). The remaining 45-50 are sentence-level skills and RC.
Is Wren & Martin enough for CDS grammar?
Yes for the rule-set. Wren & Martin covers every grammar rule CDS tests. Combine it with regular CDS PYQ practice so you see how the rules are tested — the gap between knowing a rule and applying it on a 1-minute MCQ is real.
How do I prepare for CDS RC?
Read one Hindu / Indian Express editorial daily and answer one CDS RC set per day. After 60 days, factual questions become reflex and thematic questions become a 30-second scan.
What score should I target?
For CDS IMA/AFA/INA cutoff (typically 90-110 out of 300 total), aim for 70-80 in English alone. OTA cutoffs are usually 100-120 out of 200; English should contribute 65-75.
