  • Three articles: 'A' and 'an' = indefinite (any one); 'the' = definite (a specific one). 'A' before consonant sound, 'an' before vowel sound (not letter).
  • Determiners: Words that limit a noun - articles, demonstratives (this/that), possessives (my/his), quantifiers (some, many), numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 'an honest' but 'a hotel'?

Because article choice depends on sound, not spelling. 'Honest' begins with a silent 'h' (vowel sound /o/), so 'an'. 'Hotel' begins with a pronounced /h/ (consonant), so 'a'.

Why 'a university' and not 'an university'?

'University' begins with the /y/ sound (a consonant sound), even though it starts with the letter 'u'. Same with 'a uniform', 'a European', 'a one-rupee coin'.

Do all countries take 'the'?

No. Most don't (India, France, Japan). Use 'the' only with plural country names (the Netherlands, the Philippines), federations (the United States, the United Kingdom, the UAE), and a few standard names (the Sudan, the Congo - though modern usage drops 'the').

Why 'the rich' instead of 'rich people'?

'The + adjective' refers to the group collectively: the rich = rich people in general; the poor = poor people; the educated, the unemployed, the British, the Chinese. The verb is plural: 'The rich are not always happy.'

When do school/college/church take 'the' vs no article?

No article when used for the primary purpose (go to school as a student, go to church to pray, go to bed to sleep, go to hospital as a patient). Use 'the' when visiting as a non-participant: 'I went to the school to meet the principal.'
