This table uses the spherical power from your spectacle prescription. If your prescription includes astigmatism (cylindrical power), the total must remain within the wing's limits. Ask your optometrist for the spherical equivalent if you are unsure.

Full Vision Standards by Wing

The decision table above is a simplified guide. The complete vision standards for each wing are given below. All three wings require Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) of 6/6 in each eye — the difference is in how much refractive error is allowed, and what uncorrected vision is acceptable.

NDA Army Wing — Spectacles Details

The Army wing has the most permissive vision standards among the three NDA wings. Spectacles are allowed at the medical examination and the candidate can wear them for the corrected visual acuity test.

If your current prescription is between −0.5 D and −2.5 D and BCVA is 6/6, you are likely fit for NDA Army wing eye standards. Confirm uncorrected vision (6/36 minimum) with your optometrist before your medical date.

Navy wing standards are stricter than Army on both myopia limits and uncorrected vision. Spectacles are permitted during the corrected vision test, but the minimum uncorrected threshold is tighter.

NDA Air Force Flying — No Myopia at All

The Air Force Flying branch has the most demanding vision standards of any NDA wing, and the rule on myopia is absolute: NIL myopia. This applies to both manifest refraction (your subjective spectacle prescription) and cycloplegic/retinoscopic refraction (measured after pupillary dilation with eye drops).

Even a prescription of −0.25 D (the smallest measurable myopia) is disqualifying for NDA Air Force Flying. There is no borderline or near-border tolerance. If retinoscopy reveals any myopia, the candidate is found unfit for the flying branch.

Why is the Air Force standard so strict?

Hypermetropia up to +1.5 D and astigmatism up to ±0.5 D are acceptable — pilots with mild far-sightedness perform adequately for distance tasks. But zero myopia tolerance is non-negotiable.

What Can a Myopic Person Do?

Having myopia does not automatically close all NDA doors. Here is what to consider based on your current power:

Your Myopia Power Best Options
−0.25 D to −1.0 D NDA Army and NDA Navy both available. Air Force not available unless LASIK done (age 20+, all conditions met).
−1.25 D to −2.5 D NDA Army is your best route. Navy is not available. Air Force only possible with LASIK (strict conditions).
−2.5 D to −6.0 D NDA not available. Consider LASIK after age 20 — if successful (NIL residual, all conditions met), Air Force entry may become available via NDA or AFCAT.
Higher than −6.0 D NDA not available. Even post-LASIK, pre-op refraction exceeds ±6.0 D limit for Air Force. Post-graduation entries (CDS/IMA) have different standards — research those separately.
💡
If your myopia is −2.5 D or below and you want Air Force entry, read the LASIK page for full conditions. Surgery must be after age 20, at least 12 months before your SMB date, and pre-op refraction must be ≤ ±6 D.

Uncorrected vs Corrected Vision — What Gets Tested

The Service Medical Board (SMB) tests your vision in two ways. Understanding the difference is important for knowing whether you pass both tests.

Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA)

Uncorrected means your naked-eye vision — without glasses or contact lenses. The examiner will ask you to remove your spectacles and read the Snellen chart. The minimum uncorrected thresholds are:

Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA)

Corrected means with your best spectacle correction. The examiner places trial lenses in a trial frame to find the best possible prescription, then asks you to read the chart. All three wings require 6/6 BCVA in each eye. If your corrected vision cannot reach 6/6 in either eye, you are unfit regardless of your spectacle power.

Important: The BCVA test uses spectacle correction (trial lenses), NOT contact lenses. Contact lens wear before the examination can temporarily alter corneal curvature, leading to inaccurate refraction measurements. See Section 9 on contact lenses.

Contact Lenses — Not Accepted at the Medical Board

Contact lenses are not permitted during the NDA Service Medical Board examination. This is a firm rule with two implications:

  1. You cannot wear contact lenses to the SMB — bring your spectacles. The uncorrected vision test is done without any correction, and the corrected test uses trial frame spectacle lenses, not your contact lenses.
  2. Stop wearing contact lenses at least 2 weeks before the SMB — soft contact lenses can temporarily flatten or steepen the cornea, changing the refraction measurement. This effect persists for 1–3 days after removal for soft lenses, and longer for rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses. To ensure an accurate, repeatable refraction measurement, stop wearing soft lenses at least 14 days before examination, and RGP lenses at least 4 weeks before.
Contact lens-induced corneal changes that have not fully reversed by the SMB date can cause your refraction to read falsely — either underestimating your myopia (making you appear more eligible) or overestimating it (making you appear ineligible). The former can result in medical rejection later in the pipeline when the true refraction reasserts itself. Stop contact lens use well in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are spectacles allowed in NDA?
Yes, spectacles are allowed for NDA Army and NDA Navy entries. Army wing permits myopia up to −2.5 D Sph and hypermetropia up to +2.5 D Sph. Navy wing permits myopia up to −1.0 D Sph and hypermetropia up to +2.0 D Sph. NDA Air Force Flying does not permit any myopia — even −0.25 D is disqualifying. All wings require Best Corrected Visual Acuity of 6/6 in each eye.
What is the myopia limit for NDA Army?
The myopia limit for NDA Army wing is −2.5 D spherical. Astigmatism of up to ±2.0 D Cyl is allowed within this overall limit. Best Corrected Visual Acuity must be 6/6 in each eye, and uncorrected vision must be at least 6/36. Spectacles are permitted during the corrected vision test at the SMB.
What is the myopia limit for NDA Navy?
The myopia limit for NDA Navy wing is −1.0 D spherical, making it more restrictive than Army (−2.5 D). Astigmatism is limited to ±1.0 D Cyl. Uncorrected vision must be at least 6/12 in each eye, and corrected vision must be 6/6. Colour vision Grade CP-II and binocular vision Grade III are also required.
Can I join NDA Air Force with minus power glasses?
No. NDA Air Force Flying requires NIL manifest myopia and NIL retinoscopic myopia. Any minus power — even −0.25 D — disqualifies a candidate for the flying branch. If you have myopia and want to join Air Force Flying, your only route is LASIK surgery (with all NDA conditions met — age 20+, 12 months post-op, pre-op ≤±6 D, NIL residual) before the SMB.
Can I join NDA with −3.0 D myopia?
No. −3.0 D myopia exceeds the limit for all NDA wings. NDA Army allows up to −2.5 D and NDA Navy allows up to −1.0 D. Air Force allows no myopia. If your power is −3.0 D, NDA is not available through any wing. However, you may be eligible for NDA Air Force or Navy entries after LASIK surgery — the pre-op limit for LASIK is ±6.0 D, so your −3.0 D qualifies. Consult the LASIK page for all conditions that must be met.
Can I join NDA with −1.5 D myopia?
With −1.5 D myopia, you are eligible for NDA Army wing (limit −2.5 D) but NOT eligible for NDA Navy wing (limit −1.0 D). NDA Air Force Flying is not available without LASIK. Apply for Army wing, or consider LASIK after age 20 if you want Air Force entry (−1.5 D is well within the ±6.0 D pre-op limit for LASIK).
What is the maximum plus power allowed for NDA?
The maximum hypermetropia (plus power) by wing: NDA Army — +2.5 D Sph; NDA Navy — +2.0 D Sph; NDA Air Force Flying — +1.5 D Sph. Astigmatism limits also apply within these: Army ±2.0 D Cyl, Navy ±1.0 D Cyl, Air Force ±0.5 D Cyl. All must achieve BCVA of 6/6 in each eye.
Can I join NDA if I have astigmatism?
Yes, astigmatism is allowed but within wing-specific limits. NDA Army allows up to ±2.0 D Cyl astigmatism. NDA Navy allows up to ±1.0 D Cyl. NDA Air Force Flying allows up to ±0.5 D Cyl. The total spherical equivalent of your prescription must also remain within the spherical limits for each wing. If your astigmatism is purely cylindrical with little or no spherical component, you can calculate the spherical equivalent (Sph + Cyl/2) to determine eligibility.
